Following my Bachelor of Education degree in Dublin City University I spent my first year as a Newly- Qualified Teacher working in a special educational school in Ballymun, Co. Dublin. I had a fixed- term contract in St. Michael’s House Special School from the beginning of September 2021 until the end of June 2022. I gained invaluable experience of working with pupils from the ages of six to seventeen years old with severe and profound learning disabilities. As a teacher working with children with profound learning difficulties, I developed specialised skills in creating individualised education plans, implementing multi-sensory teaching methods, utilising assistive technology, adapting curriculum materials, and providing ongoing assessment and feedback. Notably, I enhanced my abilities in building strong relationships with my students, fostering a supportive and an inclusive classroom environment whilst establishing an effective behaviour management system. I collaborated closely with other educators, therapists, and families to ensure each child's needs were met. Working with children with profound learning difficulties requires a diverse skill set including patience, empathy, effective communication, adaptability, creativity, and the ability to tailor activities to individual needs all of which I can use in any teaching position. During my second year of being a fully qualified primary school teacher I got a full-time job in St. Joseph’s National School, Rathwire as a mainstream teacher. During this time I taught Third Class (8/9 year olds). The class consisted of 28 boys and girls with a range of needs and behaviours. Going from a classroom of 5 pupils to 28 in the space of a year was a big jump but the experience I had gained from the year before and during teaching practice was extremely useful. I assessed each child's strengths, challenges, and learning styles, and adapted my teaching methods and materials accordingly. My biggest focus was fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment where children’s wellbeing was at the core. I created a space where the students felt safe and empowered to speak out and share their thoughts. Collaboration with colleagues, specialists, and families became essential, and we worked together to meet the unique needs of each student. Additionally, I developed strong classroom management skills, implementing strategies to engage and motivate all learners while addressing behavioural challenges effectively.
